A person having resided in Mecklenburg County will need to have his estate settled through the Clerk of Superior Court, Estates Division at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse. This office is located on the third floor of the courthouse and is open Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If important papers regarding personal wishes are in the safe deposit box, if possible, they should be gathered before the death occurs. After a death occurs, a safe deposit box is not accessible until a death certificate is provided to the bank. A bank representative will then allow you to inventory the box.
An appointment will need to be set up by phone or in person after initial filing of all these documents. This generally takes about three weeks. They will assist you in knowing which benefits you are eligible

Our office is required by law to mail a statement of death (form SSA-7210) to Social Security; however, it is also necessary for a family member to call one of the above numbers to set up a telephone appointment, or you may go to any Social Security office. Hours for the 800 number are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.
There is a death benefit of $255.00 available. It may be applied for in the manner described above. The representative will also be able to answer questions regarding any changes in your benefits. (Please note: the $255.00 death benefit is not available for everyone – only if there is a surviving spouse; however , benefits may apply if there are dependent children.)
You can apply for benefits by telephone or by going to any Social Security office. You may need some of the documents shown on the list below. Don't delay your application because you don't have all the information. If you don't have a document you need, Social Security can help you get it.
